Making Ageing-in-Place Work ︎

Sheahan, J., Berry, K., Vines, J., Lewis, S., Pschetz, L., Pearce, C., Wilson, C., Wright, F., Wilkinson, H.

Wellbeing, Space and Society
This article examines the practices and perspectives of those ageing in the Scottish city of Dundee through a secondary analysis of three qualitative studies. This re-analysis reveals the unequal realities of ageing-in-place, demonstrating experiences in the home and within place of making and unmaking over time. Detailing how participants foster attachment, investment, and identity in their communities, we demonstrate the factors that shape ageing-in-place over time and the implications for urban renewal and social care policy.

The impact of Long COVID on diverse Australian populations: a multi-site, longitudinal prospective cohort study protocol ︎

Luo, S., Zheng, Z., Karimi, L., Plebanski, M., Anderson, K., Jovanoski, N., Lankatillake, C., Cockshaw, W., Wollersheim, D., Sheahan, J... Itsiopoulos, C.

BMJ Open
Long COVID is a complex, multisystem chronic condition that may persist or fluctuate for months to years after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite emerging international research, significant gaps remain in understanding the full breadth of Long COVID’s impacts in Australia. No study has yet prospectively examined these multidimensional impacts using a culturally appropriate, user-validated toolkit. Our study aims to characterise symptom profiles, functional outcomes, and psychological, social, financial and behavioural impacts of Long COVID in Australian adults; identify factors associated with recovery trajectories; and validate a set of measures to support research and clinical care.

Luo, S., Zheng, Z., Karimi, L., Plebanski, M., Lankatillake, C., Sheahan, J... Itsiopoulos, C.

BMC Health Services Research
As the acute response to the COVID-19 pandemic shifts to long-term management, the lasting effects of infection are becoming increasingly evident. Long COVID continues to challenge healthcare systems, with many healthcare professionals reporting uncertainty about assessment and referral pathways. This updated review examines recent international guidelines alongside Australian services to identify gaps between guidelines and practice.

Towards a Strengths-based PEER Framework: How peer learning behaviours help develop ICT competencies in older adults ︎

Figueiredo, B., Luu, N., Buschgens, M., Aleti, T., Sheahan, J., Martin, D.M., Hjorth, L., Reid, M.

Behaviour & Information Technology
This study takes a strengths-based approach, focusing on older adults’ capabilities and agency in peer-led ICT learning environments. Drawing on qualitative data from observations and interviews with learners and peer tutors at an older adult learning organisation, we identify four key strengths-based behaviours, forming the PEER framework. Our findings demonstrate how peer learning can empower older adults and offer theoretical and practical contributions to the design of ICT programmes that build on older adults’ strengths.

Understanding the Impacts and Experiences of Long COVID and Invisible Illness on
Australians ︎

Sheahan, J., Jovanovski, N., Anderson, K., Seal, E.S., Seeley, M.C., Cleary, S., Xenos, S.

Long COVID Conference 2025, La Trobe University
Experiences of this condition align with other invisible illnesses, chronic health conditions that are not immediately visible to others but significantly affect a person's daily life. To better understand individual lived experiences, we interviewed 20 people with Long COVID, 10 with similar hidden illnesses and 10 carers. We sought to capture the impact of the condition(s) on their lives, understand individual health service needs, and the barriers they have faced accessing appropriate support.
